How RASD calculates
The methods behind every number RASD shows — so you can check our work.
Prices and data status
Live prices come from an authorized market-data provider. Every price is shown with its time and one of four statuses: live, delayed, last close, or unavailable. We never present old or cached data as live. Until the data source is activated, all prices and figures are clearly-labeled illustrative samples and must not be used for real decisions.
Average cost (weighted moving average)
Holdings use the weighted-average moving cost method. Each buy adds its total cost (quantity × price + fees) to the position's book cost and its quantity to the total. The average cost per share is the book cost divided by the quantity. This is the method used throughout RASD in version one.
Realized and unrealized profit/loss
When you sell, realized P&L = net proceeds (quantity × price − fees) minus the average cost of the shares sold. Unrealized P&L = current market value minus the remaining book cost. Selling more than you hold is blocked.
Returns: period profit, XIRR and TWR
Period cash profit = ending value − starting value − net deposits. For money-weighted return we use XIRR with an actual/365.25 day-count; when cash flows have no sign change it is not computable and we say so rather than showing a misleading number. Time-weighted return (TWR) chains sub-period returns to remove the effect of deposit timing.
Corporate actions
Share splits multiply the quantity and divide the average cost by the split ratio, keeping book cost unchanged. Cash dividends are recorded as period cash and do not change the book cost of the position.
What is not a promise
RASD is educational and indicative. It does not forecast prices, does not promise returns, and cannot prevent losses. Growth projections in the calculators are hypothetical at a rate you choose. Fees are estimates; confirm your broker's actual charges and the official disclosures before acting.
